The Sanford-Rio Negro Sisterhood agreement
Sanford signs agreement to begin sister city relationship with Rionegro, Colombia
Leaders from the cities of Sanford and Rionegro, Colombia, signed an agreement Tuesday marking the start of a two-year sister city relationship.
Sanford Mayor Art Woodruff also read a proclamation declaring Nov. 23, 2021, as Mayor Alzate Day in the City of Sanford. Rodrigo Hernandez Alzate is the mayor of Rionegro.
The group followed up the signing and a gift exchange with lunch at Hollerbach’s Willow Tree Cafe, Woodruff told the Herald, then they toured several breweries and the Orlando Sanford International Airport.
The Sanford airport figures prominently in the agreement as both cities have international airports.
“It is the main purpose of this agreement to work together on the first passenger and cargo flight route between both cities,” the agreement says.
Entities working to establish this trade route between airports include the Sanford Airport Authority, the city and Sanford business Lord and Lord Consulting, which has been instrumental in forming the relationship between the two municipalities.
